World Breastfeeding Week – Antibodies

These World Breastfeeding posts were from a series featured on the Santosha Instagram profile and Facebook page. They are short and sharp posts intended to share little facts about breastfeeding. If you would like more information, I recommend Ina May’s Guide to Breastfeeding.

When mothers kiss 💋 their babies’ heads, the mother takes up bacteria into her mouth from the baby’s head and makes antibodies specific to that bacteria. These antibodies are then passed through to the breastmilk to give the baby protection. This helps to develop the little one’s immune system. A similar system works through the nipple whereby bacteria in the baby’s saliva passes back into the mother, antibodies are produced and passed back again through the milk. Pretty clever isn’t it! Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the incidence of diarrhoea, respiratory infections and ear infections. It also can prevent dental cavities and malocclusion 😬
