BOOKS
Well-Adjusted Babies
This was one of the first “baby books” I read. And it’s still one of my favourites. Well-Adjusted Babies takes you from pre-conception care, through pregnancy health and birth options, all the way to first foods and development. Dr Jennifer Barham-Floreani is a well-respected chiropractor, author and speaker. She also has a great website Well Adjusted where you can purchase Lunchbox Solutions, an amazing and healthy recipe book she crafted with Therese Kerr (mother to Miranda) and Chef Kate (“Chef to the Stars”).
Birth with Confidence
Do you know, I actually believe that if every pregnant woman read this book, it would change a generation. I’m not joking. Or exaggerating. Birth is such an important part of our life. For mother and baby. The subtitle of this book is “Savvy choices for a normal birth” and it’s really hard to make savvy choices when we don’t know what our choices actually are. But those choices we make, or don’t make, will affect us and our babies for the rest of our lives. If you know a pregnant woman, this would have to be one of the best presents you could buy her.
Thriving Bubba
With ten years experience as a Naturopath plus new found mummahood experience, Kasey has created a community of women seeking support for their hormones, fertility, pregnancy, fourth trimester and baby health. Thriving Bubba follows Kasey’s other books such as the hormone health bible- Balanced, The Natural Way To Healthy Hormones and the preconception and pregnancy guide, Glowing Mumma. Thriving Bubba covers gut and immune health which is so critical in young children, nutritional requirements including tips and recipes, ways to reduce environmental toxins and other guidance to support your baby’s mental and physical growth.
Hormone Heresy
The Yamas & Niyamas
Away from hormones and baby-making, I just really enjoyed this book. It explores the ethical and moral code behind the practice of yoga. Long before Western culture embraced the tight-fitting yoga pants and hip, colourful yoga mats, the practice was used in a much deep, philosophical way. The Yamas (social restraints) and the Niyamas (self-disciplines) are a guide to life off the mat. They guide how we relate to other people and how we take care of ourselves.
Buddhism for Mothers
Another book to read over and over is Buddhism for Mothers. I was gifted this book at my Mother Blessing day. It’s not necessarily a book for Buddhists, but a book for mothers who want to parent more gently, have more patience and experience less frustration and anger. It’s a great gift for any mother, but also a gift for yourself to read again and again.
