Plastic Free July – take your own SHOPPING BAGS for GROCERIES

These Plastic Free July posts were from a series featured on the Santosha Instagram profile and Facebook page. They are short and sharp posts intended to share how I have minimised the usage of plastic in my life.

This one has been in the media a lot lately. South Australia banned lightweight plastic bags 9 years ago! The ACT and Tasmania followed in 2011. Queensland and Western Australia have now brought in the same bans. BUT…
The ban is only for lightweight plastic bags. Thicker bags are still being sold in supermarkets and offered in other places, such as clothing retailers. In some ways these thicker bags are actually worse as they use more plastic and will take even longer to breakdown.
Different types of bags all have their energy costs, but the best thing to do is buy a good quality bag and reuse it as much as you can.
I have had these Onya bags for years now. I also have a few cooler bags that do the rounds. But there are SO many options out there. There and others are available from Flora & Fauna and Biome.
