These Plastic Free July posts were from a series featured on the Santosha Instagram profile and Facebook page. They are short and sharp posts intended to share how I have minimised the usage of plastic in my life.
Australians use around 5.6 million nappies per day. According to The Good Human, disposable nappies use 3 times more energy, 20 times more raw materials and 2 times more water than reusables during the manufacturing process. Scientists estimate that once nappies end up in a landfill, they can take around 500 years to decompose. If you threw out a disposable nappy anytime this year, it wouldn’t fully decompose until the year 2518!
Cloth nappies are free of toxins and chemicals (like dioxin) so they are better for the environment and baby. They are also less expensive than disposables in the long term and therefore more cost-effective.
Cloth nappies aren’t the origami they used to be. There are so many brands of Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN) in different prints, sizes and styles. With Harvey we are using Little Aussie Monster (that’s his cute little bum with the alphabet nappy on) but check also check out Hello Charlie
Because Harvey is shaped like a sausage (long with skinny legs), we didn’t start using cloth nappies until he was about 8 weeks old. I tried earlier, but stuff kept leaking out the bottom. The bottom of the nappy that is! But now we’re in a rhythm and his legs have chunked up a bit, we’re using them everyday.
